How to Replace Cheap Mercedes Keys

How to Replace Cheap Mercedes Keys

Mercedes-Benz is arguably the best car in the world. As an industry pioneer, its S-Class salons feature technology that won’t be used in commercial vehicles for at least a decade or two.

If I had to name one drawback of Mercedes vehicles, it would be the cost of parts. Prices can be steep for newer models, and they haven’t come cheap over the years, a fact I learned with my 1988 S-Class. However, when it comes to the main fob, there are several alternatives that we can use to significantly reduce the cost of the replacement.

Original Mercedes-Benz keys cost $200-300 and can go up to $550. For that reason, buying aftermarket key fobs can be a lot cheaper. The best place to find replacements is on Amazon, as they have the widest selection and the best prices.

How to find the right surrogate key on Amazon

Amazon has key fobs and uncut keys for almost every Mercedes-Benz model and generation.

Finding the right key can be difficult, so to make things easier, I went through the products and found two replacements that fit the majority of Mercedes models. If the product doesn’t list the model year, you’ll have to check what your original key was to find a replacement with the same program.

Maximum replacement of automatic key

Auto Key Max sells replacement keys for about $30, which is one-tenth of what the dealer will charge you. They also sell a pair at a slight discount.

It’s an all-in-one package, with an uncut replacement metal key and a key fob. It is important that the FCC ID # of your original key matches one of the following codes:

  • IYZ3312.IYZDC
  • IYZDC07
  • IYZDC10
  • IYZDC11

The manufacturer claims that it is compatible with an extensive list of 2006-2011 Mercedes-Benz sedans, roadsters and SUVs. For a complete list, check out the manufacturer’s Amazon page. Auto Key Max guarantees 100% satisfaction, and if the product doesn’t work as expected or doesn’t meet your standards, you can request a replacement or refund within 90 days.

This key fob has 3.3 / 5 star reviews from 125 customers and some questions answered by the manufacturer. The main reason for such a low score is unreasonable customer expectations. The complaints can be summed up as: “I bought the key and I couldn’t program it myself, and no locksmith or dealer did it for me.”

This is a valid issue but has nothing to do with the main fob itself. I will talk about the main problem with the aftermarket key fob after we go through the products.

Their description isn’t the best, as these codes don’t make much sense and claim that it fits every Mercedes-Benz from 2000 onwards, but failing to confirm it in the FAQ makes me doubt its compatibility. However, it has received 3.8 / 5 stars from 160 users and has 88 questions answered, so it is likely that you will find another owner of the same Mercedes model purchased and rated. price of this product.

Problem with Fobs Key Aftermarket

Mercedes-Benz has been hard pressed to avoid their services. Their keys cannot be programmed at home or by an unlicensed mechanic or locksmith, while authorized dealers will refuse to program them, forcing you to purchase a key. OEM. If you still have the standard blade key, you can take it to the locksmith with an empty key and copy it.

So why am I recommending Amazon’s options when it seems impossible to get them to work? Depending on where you live, you may still be able to find a locksmith or dealer who can program the keys for you.

An Auto Key Max customer from Texas says they called six locksmiths to no avail. They then found a mechanic working on old Mercedes cars who agreed to program the key for $150. Considering that the dealer asks him for $192 for the key fob, $69 for the blade key, and another $169 to program the key, his total cost is still half of what the dealer paid. authorized will count.

Saving a few hundred dollars is not an insignificant amount. Paying a mechanic $150-200 to program may seem expensive, but keep in mind that they have to pay a fee to Mercedes-Benz to get the codes needed for the programming. Considering that Amazon keys only cost $30 and come with a visor key, paying more than $200 at the dealer doesn’t make sense.

If you cannot find a locksmith who will program the key for you, there is no alternative but to a dealer. However, you can still avoid spending up to $100 on a blade key by just buying the key from Amazon and taking it to a locksmith.

  • Take out the key and press the lock button on the key fob.
  • Press and hold the unlock button.
  • Without releasing the unlock button, press and hold the lock button for 1 second, four times.
